Macgirl Media Pick of the Week: This is Happening

This is Happening.  LCD Soundsystem.  Turn it up folks.

This is the third and possibly best album by LCD, (LCD Soundsystem is the musical project of producer James Murphy.  He also founded DFA Records).  It's also billed as the "last", but I hope down the line that is rescinded.

A mix of dance and punk sounds, LCD never fails to impress, and I can't stress how much I enjoy this album.  Great lyrics, great music, great everything.

Just trust me and get it- now.  You can order a limited pack on the LCD website, including the double vinyl cut of the album.

Or buy here on iTunes:  This Is Happening - LCD Soundsystem

Macgirl Media Pick of the Week: She and Him (again!)

Not to be confused with being a fan girl, i waited quite a bit to grab the new album, Volume Two, by She and Him (She & Him are Zooey Deschanel & M. Ward).  Always a fan of Zooey Deschanel (did you find the Tin Man miniseries as awesome as I did?), I really love her voice.  The last album (Volume One) was very enjoyable, and I looked forward to this new creation.  I hoped it would be a strong follow to the duo's first album.

And it is.  It's a solid record.  The song In the Sun is easy and smooth, Don't Look Back, with its strong retro sound is a fave, and what a great rendition of Ridin' In My Car!

If you like She and Him, this will not disappoint.  You can grab it on iTunes here :Volume Two - She & Him.

Till next week!

Macgirl Media Pick of the Week: GJB FTW!

So most readers know I'm a big fan of the tv show LOST.  I was thrilled to find at the start of the new season that Jorge Garcia (Hugo Reyes on LOST), had started a LOST podcast with his girlfriend Beth.  We already enjoy his musings on his blog "dispatchesfromtheisland.blogspot.com" here at TDL, so this addition was exciting news.

Having listened to all of their podcasts so far, I definitely recommend listening for any LOST fan to get a different perspective into the show.  The idea of the podcast:  they both read and review each episode SCRIPT as it arrives, and discuss their thoughts and theories.  Then, after the episode has aired (often months later), they record a follow up to the earlier discussion, noting changes or differences in how the scenes looked in the show verses how it read.  There is a healthy dose of commentary and cute banter.  I enjoy listening to both of them, and am glad they took on this project.  It definitely had added to my overall LOST experience.  So check them out!  Geronimo Jack' s Beard is a fun trip into the LOST universe. (be sure to check out the great artwork and theme music too, donated by friends and fans.)

Macgirl's Media Pick of the Week: Daylight

Matt & Kim:  daylight.  Ok, it isn't that new, or amazingly groundbreaking.  But I like it.  It has a fun catchy beat and clever lyrics.  It's a song I can turn up on my iPod during my train ride, and close my eyes.  The men-in-suits reading the Wall Street Journal and ladies wearing skirts with goofy track shoes and too much purfume disappear from around me.  I actually escape to another place during this track.  By the end of the song, I'm wearing a small wry smile and can almost tolerate the loud-phone-talker two rows behind me.  (Note to said loud-phone-talker: we don't care what kindergarten your daughter got into, or how much your slipped disc hurts- just read your newspaper and be quiet!)

Get it free on their site.  Or, if you like their songs, you can buy the whole album on iTunes.

Macgirl's Media Pick of the Week: Star Blazers!

I was a bit of a nerd as a child.  Preferred my LEGOs and tinker toys (shaped into super-cool lazer ray guns of course).  I had one main TV obsession as a six-year old.  And that obsession was space-themed anime.  From the Wiki:  Star Blazers is an American animated TV series adapted from a Japanese sci-fi trilogy anime series called Space Battleship Yamato I, II and III.

Star Blazers ran from 1979-1980 in the US. There's so much to this short-lived series.  It had, gulp, adult themes!  There was flirting!  There were sexy girls and lots of loud people yelling "Look-out!" and fighting. The epic space ship battles were my favorite part of the show.  I so super duper loved this series.  I bought the whole thing on VHS tape the second I could, quite a few (15!?) years ago.  It's finally available in digital form, on iTunes.

My favorite memory of watching Star Blazers is of turning my Dad's recliner into a "spaceship", with rocket launchers and laser guns, fighting my next-door neighbor as he piloted the couch.  Pew-pew-pew!   We'd re-enact the whole episode we just watched, adding new drama and lots of fighting.  I'd love to hear your Star Blazers memories...add a comment below!
